Lesson 1

Answer the question, “Why fundraise for your archive?”

Archives are under pressure to preserve and house our countries historical documents and government support is no longer enough to allow us to do the job properly.

In the 1980’s the education and health sectors saw government funding decrease and were forced to diversify revenue by looking to private sector donors. Almost all areas of the non-profit sector in Canada now raise money from both governments and private sector sources.

Who do you need to inform about your fundraising?

If you are an independent archive you can begin fundraising anytime you are ready. If you are an archive within a larger organization you may need to tell someone within your reporting structure. Are there other departments that need to know what you are doing? Are there other departments that might collaborate with you?
