TOWARD A SECOND EDITION OF RAD:
A REPORT

April 2006

Dear colleagues:

The Canadian Committee on Archival Description (CCAD) is pleased to present Toward a Second Edition of RAD: A Report . This report is the result of a consultation held throughout 2004. A first round of consultations was launched in January of that year. An interim report to the community was made at the BCA Symposium on May 26 and at various conferences in May and June. In order to seek wider input from the archival community, a second round of consultations on the RAD2 draft was launched at the time. CCAD decided to add five questions bearing more specifically on issues identified during the compilation of the feedback we received: the structure of the standard, integration of feedback, punctuation, inclusion of metadata, and the addition of a chapter on relations. The new round of consultations ended September 30. All the comments were analyzed at the end of 2004 and the report was completed in the summer of 2005. At its meeting in October 2005, the CCA Board of Directors reviewed the report and asked CCAD to go a step further from its recommendation. With the approbation of the Board, the report was sent to translation.

The report covers the current situation as well as the feedback we have received. It also presents recommendations and options to explore regarding the future of RAD. It is completed by an Addendum written at the beginning of this year explaining the status of the review and the next steps to be undertaken by CCAD on behalf of the Canadian archival community.

As always, input from the community is of great importance to the Committee. Please forward your comments to Isabelle-D. Alain at ialain@archivescanada.ca.
