Archives Restore Dignity to Forgotten Cemetery

The recent acquisition of records from the former Elgin County House of Industry, now described on Archives Canada, were instrumental in locating a cemetery that had long since been forgotten. Researchers from the Elgin County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society discovered that one of the registers in the fonds contained a hand drawn plot plan of burials from 1876 to 1893. Further investigation determined that the cemetery still existed. This information was critical in altering proposed development plans for the site; information which if discovered at a later date would have had costly implications. Elgin County Council has also saw fit to register the cemetery and erect a monument on the grounds, thereby providing a measure of dignity to the over one hundred persons interred there.
